Progress in Vista Hermosa, Guatemala

In Vista Hermosa, Guatemala, progress is being built one step at a time.

This summer, the People’s Consultants continued supporting a community-led clean water project in Vista Hermosa—an effort rooted in persistence, and the shared belief that every community deserves reliable access to safe water. While the work is physically demanding and progress has not come without setbacks, each milestone has brought the project closer to making a lasting impact for local families. Continue reading for an update on the project.

One of the biggest moments of the past several weeks came when the crew digging the community well hit water at approximately 8.5 meters deep. It was an exciting and encouraging milestone, especially after weeks of labor-intensive work.

But as with many projects of this kind, the path forward has not been simple.

Shortly after making progress, the team encountered a massive boulder deep in the dig site—an obstacle that delayed the project by nearly three weeks. Removing it took the effort of five men to lift it out. It was a challenging setback, but the crew stayed committed and kept moving forward.

Now, the work continues. The team still needs to dig approximately seven more meters in order to create enough water reserve at the base of the well. Because water is already entering the shaft, they must pump it out while continuing to dig. At the moment, the current pump is not powerful enough to keep up with the volume of water, so the team is working alongside the municipality to secure a larger pump and continue safely and efficiently.

At the same time, another important part of the project has already reached a major success. The education and training team has completed all of the planned community training sessions, with near-perfect attendance throughout the program.

In the coming weeks, the project will move into its next phase. A full community meeting is planned to prepare for pipeline work, and local workers will begin digging the trenches needed to help move water where it is needed most. Each stage of the process is designed not only to improve access to water, but to do so in a way that centers community involvement and ownership.

For the People’s Consultants, this is what meaningful impact looks like: working alongside communities, supporting local leadership, and helping build the resources needed to protect health, dignity, and opportunity. The work in Vista Hermosa is still ongoing, but the progress made so far is a reminder that lasting change is built through patience and perseverance.

We are grateful to everyone involved in this project—from the crew on the ground to the community members participating in training and planning for what comes next. Their dedication is helping turn a long-term vision into something tangible: greater access to clean water, and a stronger future for the Vista Hermosa community.
