A Major Milestone for Clean Water in Vista Hermosa
Progress continues in Vista Hermosa, Guatemala, where Agua del Pueblo and The People’s Consultants are working alongside the local community to improve access to safe, reliable water.
Earlier this summer, we shared an update from Vista Hermosa as crews worked through the difficult process of digging a new well by hand. Progress was slower than originally anticipated as workers encountered massive rocks beneath the ground, requiring tremendous patience and persistence to remove.
Today, we’re excited to share that their hard work has paid off.
The Well Is Complete and There Is Water
After months of careful excavation, the new well has reached a depth of 14 meters, with approximately 6 meters of water collected within it.
In August, the team successfully completed a flow test to determine whether the well could provide enough water to meet the community’s needs. The results were encouraging: the well produced a flow of 1.99 liters per second. Enough to provide more than 90 liters of water per person each day.
This marks an important turning point for the project.
With excavation complete and the well successfully tested, work can now move toward rehabilitating the broader water system and installing the equipment needed to pump water from the new well to the community’s distribution tank.
Building More Than a Water System
Construction is only one part of creating a water system that can serve Vista Hermosa for years to come.
Throughout the project, Agua del Pueblo has worked directly with the community’s water committee and residents through a series of workshops covering community organization and leadership, environmental stewardship, water management, hygiene, and health.
Residents have also been actively involved in developing regulations for how their new water system will be administered and maintained. Additional operation and maintenance training will take place as the rehabilitation work nears completion.
This community-led approach is central to Agua del Pueblo’s philosophy: a sustainable water project doesn’t simply bring water to a community, it gives residents the knowledge and tools to manage that resource for generations.
Teaching Healthy Habits to the Next Generation
The project has also reached some of Vista Hermosa’s youngest residents.
Agua del Pueblo partnered with the local school to hold a hygiene and handwashing workshop for children, helping students understand how something as simple as proper handwashing can protect their health.
It is a meaningful reminder that access to clean water creates an impact far beyond the water system itself. It supports better hygiene, healthier families, and stronger communities.
Vista Hermosa Reaches 43% Completion
With the well completed, flow testing successful, community workshops underway, and several major infrastructure steps finished, the Vista Hermosa water-system rehabilitation project has now reached 43% completion.
There is still important work ahead.
The next phases include installing transmission and distribution piping, completing additional infrastructure, installing water meters, adding the pumping system, conducting water-quality testing, and completing operation and maintenance training with the community.
But reaching this point represents an important milestone, especially after the unexpected challenges encountered during excavation.
From breaking through enormous rocks by hand to finally seeing a successful flow test, every step brings Vista Hermosa closer to something many of us take for granted every day: reliable access to clean water.
